As we were hoping to go to Gualeguaychu in Argentina for the last weekend of it's Carnaval, our next stop in Uruguay was the small riverside town of Mercedes. Whilst not exactly a tourist mecca, we were drawn by the promise of a shady, cobblestoned streets and an undeveloped riverfront with 'grassy spots to lazy around on between dips' - basically a smaller version of Colonia but with a clean river.
Although the old town wasn't much to speak of, and certainly isn't in the same league as Colonia, the riverfront was spectacular and we could have happily spent a few more days lazing by it. Unlike the Rio de la Plata, the Rio Negro on to which Mercedes backs is much nicer to swim in and the river itself comes complete with a sandy shoreline, perfect for sunbathing. Being such a small town, Mercedes doesn't have many restaurants to speak of, so we did a little shop in the local supermarket and took it to the riverside for an evening picnic whilst watching the sunset. Not too bad at all.
