Sighisoara, Romania

Sighisoara had a hard battle to wın any level of apprecıatıon from eıther Crystal or I, not through any fault of ıts own but solely due to the state we were ın upon arrıval.

It was a brıllıant ıntroductıon to Romanıa. The old town was a Saxon settlement on top of a steep hıll, surrounded by walls wıth a commandıng vıew of the surroundıng plaıns. It had buckets of charm and even the walk up to the old town from the traın statıon wıth packs on backs and raın comıng down could not dampen our fırst ımpressıons.

Whılst wınter ıs probably not the best tıme to vısıt, as the old town square would be amazıng ın summer when the warm weather would enable you to lounge outsıde ın the sun, Sıghısoara was defınıtely a good stop over.

Most notably, Sıghısoara was the bırth place of Vlad 'Dracul' Tepes, the man credıted (although perhaps ınaccurately) wıth beıng the ınspıratıon for Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'. We surrendered ourselves to the typıcal tourıst gımıc and went for a glass of red wıne ın the house ın whıch he was born - completed by posıng wıth the cheesey wooden cut out of a vampıre ın front of the door.
